Stream Viewer Property Page Extension Utility from JSWare Stream Viewer can be installed on Windows NT4, 2000 and XP. It will add a new Properties window when a file is right-clicked and Properties is selected. The new window, named Streams, provides access to view and/or delete Alternate Data Streams (ADS) associated with a file. Alternate Data Streams are hidden files that can be permanently linked to visible files on NTFS file systems. As such, they present a potential security risk and may be used to restrict your control of your own computer, since ADS are not normally visible, editable, or deletable through Windows Explorer. USAGE: When the Streams tab in a files Properties dialogue is selected, a list is displayed of any ADSs that file may have. Selecting an ADS in the list and clicking View will display the content of that stream. (If the stream is greater than 2 KB, only the first 2 KB will be displayed. If the display includes strange characters the stream may be a binary file - a non-text file such as a picture or executable.) Click Delete to remove the selected stream from the file. Any NT system installed to an NTFS file system partition is capable of saving ADSs. The Stream Viewer was created as a security aid for Windows NT systems. (NT4, 2000, XP) Also, with the release of Windows XP Service Pack 2, files downloaded from the Internet using Internet Explorer are permanently labelled with an ADS named Zone.Identifier. The Zone.Identifier stream contains a record of the IE security zone that the file came from and may include the original source URL of the file. That may cause Windows XP to warn about the safety of the downloaded file every time it is opened! Stream Viewer can be used to remove these intrusive Zone.Identifier streams and stop the pointless security nags that are caused by them. LICENSE: Stream Viewer is copyrighted software.
